This week, we will:

 

Monday, 08/31/15

Art Day

·         I will introduce Unit 2 with a PowerPoint and discussion, and we will complete Exercise 2A.

·         I will administer a Fall Primary & Elementary Spelling Inventory.

·         We will watch the Rikki Tikki Tavi animated classic, and discuss the difference in show vs. tell characterization between a video and a written text.

·         I will continue presenting about the different regions of the United States, important landforms, and how to read a map.  We will continue to stop after each region, and add to our large US Regional Maps.

HW: No Homework.  Spirit Night at Escalantes!

 

Tuesday, 09/01/15

·         We will correct 2A, and begin Exercise 2B.

·         We will begin the 2nd story in our Short Story Unit, “What Jo Did,” with a PowerPoint presentation introducing the story, background, and literary elements, as well as giving students the opportunity to respond to a journal prompt related to the story.  Additionally, we will conduct our first reading of the story with a focus on plot and conflict.

·         Students will answer comprehension questions based on the story, and will present to the class round-robin style.

·         I will finish presenting about the different regions of the United States, important landforms, and how to read a map.  We will continue to stop after each region, and will finish our large US Regional Maps.

HW: Finish WW 2B.

 

Wednesday, 09/02/15

Computer Lab Day

·         We will correct 2B, and begin Exercise 2D.

·         We will introduce the Plot Diagram and related literary terms by watching and discussing a short video that traces the plot of Disney’s Aladdin, a story with which most students are already very familiar.  We will then take notes on the Plot Diagram.

·         Students will work in pairs to complete a Plot Diagram Graphic Organizer for the story “What Jo Did,” with students rereading the story as needed.

·         Students will create a Travel Postcard for an assigned Region of the US, incorporating visuals, as well as facts from our notes and other research sources.

HW: Finish WW 2D.

 

Thursday, 09/03/15 – OPEN HOUSE 6:30-7:30 pm

·         We will correct Exercise 2D. 

·         We will share and review our “What Jo Did” Plot Diagrams from the previous day, making sure that all students understand the elements of plot, and discussing how a well-rounded plot helps to enhance the effectiveness of a short story.  Students will complete a “What Jo Did” Comprehension Check and journal prompt to assess their understanding of the story.

·         We will finish our Travel Postcards for an assigned Region of the US, incorporating visuals, as well as facts from our notes and other research sources.  Once complete, students will present their postcards to the class in the form of a gallery walk.

·         Students will read a non-fiction passage regarding the climate and geography of the Philippines, one of our 5th grade Passport Global countries, and answer comprehension questions.

HW: Study WW Words for QUIZ tomorrow.

 

Friday, 09/04/15

Work Stations

·         Students will take a quiz on the Wordly Wise Unit 2 words.

·         Students will work on map skills reading comprehension activity as it related to regions of the United States.

·         Philippines vs. US Regions Compare/Contrast Activity (40):  Students will create a Venn Diagram, comparing/contrasting their assigned Region with the Philippines.  They will then use this information to write a short compare/contrast paper, and have an opportunity to share with the class.

·         Students will have the opportunity to finish/improve work as needed, or to independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.


HW:  Read & Rest.
