This week, we will:

 

Monday, 09/19/16

Library – Furnari

·          I will introduce Wordly Wise List 1 to the students using a Powerpoint presentation.  They will complete an exercise for homework.

·          We will correct and collect “Thank You, M’am” Comprehension Check, pausing to clarify student misunderstandings as needed.

·          We will discuss BOTR Ch. 5, which students read to self on Friday.  We will read BOTR Chapter 6, aloud together.

Work Stations

·          Read to self: BOTR, Ch. 7

·          Work on Wordly Wise (WW) 1A.

·          Work on Textbook Scavenger Hunt, on Native Americans and Explorers.

·          Students may independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.

HW: Read for 30 minutes.

 

 

Tuesday, 09/20/16

Library—Weiman

·          We will correct Wordly Wise 1A from their homework the previous day. 

·          We will conclude our short story unit with Julia Avarez’s personal essay/Literary Non-Fiction piece “Names/Nombres.”  Students will respond to a Pre-Reading Journal Prompt to focus their reading.  Students will then participate in a read aloud of “Names/Nombres” and answer reading comprehension questions.

·          Students will answer comprehension questions based on the story, and will present to the class round-robin style.

·          We will discuss BOTR Ch. 7, which students read to self on Monday.  We will read BOTR Chapter 8, aloud together.

Work Stations

·          Students will read BOTR Chapter 9 independently.

·          Work on WW 1B.

·          Work on Textbook Scavenger Hunt, on Native Americans and Explorers.

·          Students may independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.

HW: Read for 30 minutes.

 

Wednesday, 09/21/16

Early Dismissal: 12:30 p.m.

Hispanic Heritage Assembly

·          We will correct Wordly Wise 1B from their homework the previous day.  We will discuss how to complete Exercise E, which has students read a non-fiction passage and provide short answers to questions.

·          We will review students’ answers to comprehension questions about “Names/Nombres”.  We will then focus on the genre of Literary Non-Fiction.  We will discuss aspects of this genre of literature, and take notes.

·          We will read BOTR Chapter 10, ½ aloud together, and ½ independently.

Work Stations

·          Students will read BOTR Chapter 10, second ½ independently.

·          Work on WW 1E.

·          Work on Textbook Scavenger Hunt, on Native Americans and Explorers.

·          Students may independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.

HW: Read for 30 minutes.

 

Thursday, 09/22/16

·          We will correct Wordly Wise 1E from their homework the previous day. 

·          We will introduce a “Names/ Nombres” project, where students research the meanings & origins of their own name, and reflect on how their names fit with their personalities (due Thurs., 9/29).

·          We will discuss the second half of BOTR Ch. 10, which students read to self the day before.  We will then read Ch. 11 aloud together.

Work Stations

·          Students will read BOTR Chapter 12 independently.

·          Begin “Names/Nombres” Project.

·          Work on WW 1D.

·          Complete Textbook Scavenger Hunt.

·          Students may independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.

HW: Study for Wordly Wise QUIZ tomorrow.  Read for 30 minutes.

 

Friday, 09/23/16

·          We will discuss characterization as we have seen it throughout our short stories.  Students will then begin working on a character map for Julia, the main character/narrator of “Names/Nombres”.

·          We will review the Social Studies textbook scavenger hunt students have worked on all week, and discuss concepts and content presented.

·          We will discuss BOTR Ch. 12, which students read to self the day before.  We will then read Ch. 13 aloud together.

Work Stations

·          Students will complete Wordly Wise Quiz 1.

·          Students will read BOTR Ch. 14 independently.

·          Work on Character Map for Julia Alvarez.

·          Students may independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.

HW:  Read & Rest.
