Week of 10/12/15 - 10/16/15

Parents & Students:  There will be a Middle School Information Night taking place this Thursday from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in the Kolter Cafeteria.  Please make sure to attend this important event, and visit with representatives from many of HISD’s middle schools now that the magnet application process has begun.

 

This week, we will:

 

Monday, 10/12/15

Art Day

·         I will pass out weekly word lists, and spelling work menus.

·         We will take an open-book BOTR Final Test. 

Work Stations

·         Finish Social Studies Textbook Scavenger Hunt.

·         Work on Weekly Spelling Work.

·         Students may independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.

HW:  Work on Spelling Activity A (due Fri. 10/16).  Read for 30 minutes.

 

Tuesday, 10/13/15

Library – Furnari

·         We will conclude our short story unit with Julia Avarez’s personal essay “Names/Nombres.”  Students will:

  • respond to a Pre-Reading Journal Prompt to focus their reading
  • independently read “Names/Nombres” and answer reading comprehension questions
  • complete a Characterization Graphic Organizer

Work Stations

·         Students will create 1 Frayer Model from each of the 6 Wordly Wise Units we have studied so far, 6 Frayer Models total (due Fri. 10/16).

·         Work on Weekly Spelling Work.

·         Students may independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.

HW: Work on Spelling Activity B (due Fri. 10/16).  Read for 30 minutes.

 

Wednesday, 10/14/15

Computer Lab Day

·         Introduce a “Names/ Nombres” take home assignment, where students research the meanings & origins of their own name, and reflect on how their names fit with their personalities (due Fri. 10/16).

·         Review the “Names/Nombres” story and activities from the previous day.

·         We will review the Textbook Scavenger Hunt about the colonization of America, pausing to discuss and clarify misunderstandings as needed.

·         We will review a Colonial Regions PowerPoint, and complete a Colonial Regions Graphic Organizer, which will supplement our Colonial Regions WebQuest from Computer Lab, pausing to discuss and answer questions as needed.

HW:  Work on Spelling Activity C if assigned to your group (due Fri. 10/9).  Work on Names/ Nombres Take Home Activity.  Read for 30 minutes. 

 

 

Thursday, 10/15/15
Library – Weiman

·         Review a Road to Self-Government PowerPoint & take notes on systems of colonial government and why the colonists began to rebel.

·         Watch portions of the History Channel’s America The Story of Us – Rebels Episode, and complete an Active Viewing Guide.

·         We will watch a French & Indian War BrainPop, and we will pause to discuss as needed.  We will begin to take notes on the French & Indian War.

Work Stations

·         Work on 6 Wordly Wise Frayer Models (due Fri. 10/16).

·         Work on Weekly Spelling Work.

·         Students may independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.

HW: Study for Spelling Test.  Work on Names/ Nombres Take Home Activity.  Read for 30 minutes.

 

Friday, 10/16/15

·         We will finish taking notes on the French & Indian War.

·         We will introduce Literature Circles and Literature Circle Questions to students in their guided reading groups.  Groups will preview books and solidify their final book selections.

Work Stations

·         Complete a Words Their Way Weekly Spelling Test, and turn in Weekly Spelling Work.

·         Complete a Names Acrostic Poem, using their Names/Nombres Take Home Activity as a guide.

·         Finish 6 Wordly Wise Frayer Models (due Fri. 10/16).

·         Students may independently read a “good fit” book of their own choosing.

HW:  Read & Rest.
