Week of 10/13/14 - 10/17/14

This week, we will:

 

Monday, 10/13/14

Furnari—Library

·         Collect reading log from last week, and pass out new log.

·         Introduce Wordly Wise Unit 6 Vocabulary with a PowerPoint & discussion.

·         Review Frayer Models with the students.  They will need to do frayer models for 2 words this week; assign the words per student.

·         Review Colonists and Taxes foldable, and discuss how students would feel if they were colonists under these taxes.

·         The Road to Self-Government: We will review forms of Colonial Government, and review the causes of the American Revolution.  Students will learn about the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre to add to the list of causes today.

HW:  Read 30 minutes & log it, Istation (as needed).  Finish Wordly Wise 6A & Frayer Models (due Thursday).

Tuesday, 10/14/14

·  Correct Wordly Wise 6A, and begin working on 6B/Frayer Models.

·  Continue working on a FMUF Story Elements Chart, especially discussing conflict and plot developments.

·  We will begin practicing the first two literature circle jobs: Passage Picker and Language Launcher. 

·   Read the beginning of Ch. 6 from FMUF as a class.

Workstation Groups

o   Students will take “Ray Bradbury”, the first HISD Reading Snapshot.

o   Read to Self, the remainder of Ch.6 from FMUF

o   Work on Literature Circle Jobs.

o   For those whom this applies to, work on My Brother Sam Is Dead assignment.

o   WW, 6B.

o   If any student needs to finish the notes from the day before, they can during this time.

o   Istation as needed.

HW:  Read 30 minutes & log it, Istation (as needed).  Finish Wordly Wise 6B  & Frayer Models (due Thursday). 

 

Wednesday, 10/15/14

·  Correct Wordly Wise 6B.

·  Look at exemplary work from students on the Passage Picker and Language Launcher jobs. Discuss what makes this student work exemplary.

·  Together, watch more of “The Revolution: Boston Bloody Boston” video, which brings the action of the American Revolution causes to life.

·  Students will work on an illustrated timeline to review the notes they took Monday.  This timeline should include all major events.

HW:  Read 30 minutes & log it, Istation (as needed).  Finish Wordly Wise 6D Frayer Models (due tomorrow).

 

Thursday, 10/16/14

Computer Lab Day: Furnari—7:55-8:45 a.m.; 1:05-2:00 p.m.

·  Correct Wordly Wise 6D, and grade Unit 6 work.

Workstation Groups

o   Gallery walk with the Frayer Models completed by their classmates.

o   Work with individual table groups, reviewing for Social Studies and preparing for Assessment 1.

o   Read to Self, Ch. 7 from FMUF

o   For those whom this applies to, work on My Brother Sam Is Dead assignment.

o   WW, 6D.

o   If any student needs to finish the notes from the day before, they can during this time.

o   Istation as needed.

HW:  Read 30 minutes & log it, Istation (as needed).  Study for Unit 6 Vocab. Quiz & Social Studies Snapshot.

Friday, 10/17/14

P.E. Day

5th Grade Assembly: 9:40-10:20 a.m.

·         Take Unit 6 QUIZ.

·         Take Snapshot Assessment 1.

·         When students finish, they will work on a writing extension activity, based on the Boston Massacre, which has students: look at 4 images, read excerpts from newspapers, and then write their own letter to the editor responding to this event with our own opinion in our notebooks.

·         Students will look at the next two literature circle jobs: Summarizer and Text Connector.  These jobs also have an illustration for each.

HW:  Read 30 minutes & log it, Istation (as needed).  Get Reading Log signed.
